Artist Statement

In my artistic work I explore the tensions between what is remembered and what is forgotten, the duality of deep joy as well as profound grief. How the passage of time can both distort and blur, or at times make vividly clear. My work represents a personal excavation of who and what has shaped me, what comes to the surface and what remains below. The use of color, form and texture illustrates these imprints. The natural world is great inspiration to me. I am continually surprised how a tree, a rock, a shell, shares these principles.

Through layering and mark-making, I strive to both build up surface as well as dig back into what lies beneath. Close attention is paid to the contrasts of translucency and opacity, matte and gloss, as a means to represent contradiction. Repetitive shapes and marks illustrate life patterns. My work, to paraphrase the great teacher and painter Hans Hoffman, is a medium of expression through which I translate my inner world; the push pull of my life.

Biography

summer studio in the old horse stall

in the moors of the Outer Cape

I was raised by two artists; my mother a photographer, my father a musician. My mother came from France, my father New England. I grew up in Washington, D.C. and spent my summers in France and on Cape Cod. We spoke both french and english at home. These dualities formed and shaped how I process and interpret the world. I learned to find beauty in the old and weathered and to respect the imperfections that come with age and history. My mother taught me how to see, to discover beauty in the ordinary; how to find light.

After obtaining a degree in French and Italian from Trinity College in Hartford CT., I moved to New York and worked in fashion design at Ralph Lauren and interior design at Aero Studios.

I have been married to my husband Rich for 30 years and together we have 3 adult children. We split our time between Chicago and Truro, MA. We love to travel and cherish daily walks in nature with our rescue Fisher.
