Maman, teaching us how to see

Circles and Squares is a body of work that began as an exercise of repetition given to me by my mentor and teacher Lisa Pressman. The prompt was to make 100 drawings of a symbol of my choice that had personal meaning. I remembered a childhood family conversation where we each had to choose a shape that we most identified with.

The loss of my mother created a wound that opens and closes as I continue to live my life. Her imprint is indelible. Her shape is part of my shape.

My mother chose a circle. I chose a square.
